Faculty Meet discusses Antibiotic Policy

Antimicrobial resistance has been identified by the World Health Organization as an increasingly relevant global health burden. Realising the magnitude of the problem, the central government as well as the Government of Kerala have decided to generate policies and guidelines on the optimal usage of antibiotics. In this context, the Department of General Surgery took up antibiotic policy as the topic of discussion for the monthly Faculty meeting which was held on the 1st of August. Dr Aravind R, Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases was invited to deliver a lecture on this subject. The meeting was convened by Dr Preetha S, the faculty convenor and was chaired by Dr K Mohandas, Professor and Head of the Department of General Surgery. Dr Aravind kept the audience engaged with his entertaining presentation. He elaborated the need for formulating antibiotic policies for the state as well as the institution. Available data from the hospital including the antibiograms were discussed. He also briefly described the pertinent literature on this topic. Following the lecture, there was lively discussion from the part of the faculty as well as the residents. At the end of the discussion, it was decided to depute one of the faculties from the department as the resource person for the antibiotic stewardship committee. He was entrusted with the task of acting as the liaison between the department and the stewardship committee. The meeting ended on an academically positive note, having served as an eye-opener on the latest aspects of antibiotic usage.
